The Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects Ahmedabad Gujarat India lecture at the OPENING OF THE XII BEAU. SPANISH ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN PLANNING BIENNAL / LIVE ARCHITECTURE Since the year of its establishment, the Spanish Architecture and Town Planning Biennial – Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, formerly the Spanish Architecture Biennial – has been incorporating into its overall programme a number of specifically architecture-related activities organised by the various collaborating institutions and a travelling exhibition which each year features the works that are shortlisted and win awards in each of the categories on account of their qualities. The theme of the 2013 biennial was ‘Inflexión/Turning Point’, and the award-winning and shortlisted projects focused on rehabilitation, a town planning based on change, and an architecture that is environmentally friendly and not costly to maintain. As a result of this call and of the selected works, the Ministry of Development, with the collaboration of AC/E, is organising and producing the Live Architecture exhibition designed by the young architects’ studio Taller de Casquería.Live Architecture shows the award-winning architecture from a close and dynamic approach. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a major video installation that conveys not only the value of the prize-winning projects but also how they are used and experienced and how they behave over time, in daylight and with night illumination. Its design allows it to be shown simultaneously in several cities and in different formats. The exhibition project was presented at the 12th Spanish Architecture and Town Planning Biennial (BEAUXII). Its aim is to make known the award-winning architecture in use, by showing the different stages of activity and how spaces are understood through their users. The focal point of the exhibition space is a black box with a large screen that displays all the information. All the buildings selected by the biennial are shown, evidencing their relations and unique features. Cross-cutting readings are made as equivalent or contrasting situations appear and are related on the screen. Management software was specially developed for this purpose to coordinate the different live entries in relation to the pool of recorded videos. A red light bulb would light up when live connections were made. Organiced by: -ACCIÓN CULTURAL ESPAÑOLA (AC/E) -MINISTERIO DE FOMENTO collaborators:

Since its inception, the office has designed and built several buildings, focusing mainly on public buildings, cultural facilities and infrastructure obtained as the result of national and international competitions. The work of the office is focused on the intimate relation between tangible and intangible aspects, trying to understand architecture as a sensorial interface, as an atmosphere between the person and the environment. From its foundation, ch+qs has designed city council chambers, sports pavilions and facilities, libraries, cultural centers, cinema complexes, infrastructure, kiosks, refuges, collective houses, private homes, twons in the Sahara for petrol companies, furniture, books, typographies and so on. The office rejects the notion of specialization and instead promotes interdisciplinary ventures and collaboration. Many of ch+qs’ buildings and projects have received awards and have been widely published in national and international publications such as Architectural Record, New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Detail, Mark, Frame, etc. Awards include the Mies van der Rohe Prize (selected), and first prizes from the following: Great Indoors Award 2013, LAMP Prize 2013, COAM Prize 2013, Archdaily Building of the Year 2012, FAD Prize 2012, COAM prize 2012, Public Space European Award 2012 (finalist), ENOR International Young Architects Prize 2007, ENOR Prize 2005, CAM Madrid Regional Government Prize 2003, Bigmat Prize, INC. Invited to lecture at SANGATH, Balkrishna Doshi´s Office and Foundation http://www.sangath.org/ VASTUSHILPA CONSULTANTS 'Sangath' Drive In Road Ahmedabad - 380054, India 0091-79-27454537/39 The Indian architect and planner Balkrishna V. Doshi is one of the most accomplished and influential personalities of his country; but beyond that, his teaching philosophy and cultural theories have placed him in a prominent position on the international scene. From his early contacts and his long collaboration with Le Corbusier, when the latter was building in India, Doshi learned “to observe and react to climate, to tradition, to function, to structure, to economy and to the landscape around me.” And from Louis I. Kahn and his architectural masterpieces in India he learned about art and architecture as the achievement of universal harmony and the articulation of spaces as a meaningful social order. But Doshi realized that these great and serene lessons did not make his architecture genuine contemporary Indian architecture. “… I have in the last two decades gradually discovered that the buildings that I have designed somehow have a foreign look.” Doshi’s reasoning for this is: “I was educated outside of India, learning from great masters, but I still was educated outside of myself.” |

Josemaría de Churtichaga Circumstance and Reinvention: The Story of Vaults without Falsework 6.30pm, Wednesday 15 May _
The town of Villanueva de la Cañada, just north of Madrid, suffered more than most in the Spanish Civil War (1936-9). Situated on the line of conflict, its buildings were reduced to rubble in the crossfire. After the war the town was chosen for reconstruction, but the architects were faced with a major technical problem - there was no steel or wood from which to make beams and lintels. The architects of Villanueva de la Cañada, however, found the solution to this problem in what is known outside of Spain as the Catalan arch or vault, a light barrel vault made of brick, and without falsework. This lecture will trace the history of this construction device, from the early middle ages (it was used in the dome of Hagia Sophia) to its use by Gaudí (in the school at the Sagrada Familia), to Le Corbusier, and then, via the work of Gustavino, to the USA. Josemaría G. de Churtichaga is an architect and structural engineer in private practice, having worked for many years with Juan Navarro Baldeweg. He and his partner, Cayetana de la Quadra- Salcedo, researched and curated an exhibition on the reconstruction of Villanueva de la Cañada. |
